Performance of Oracle Linux Across Market Features
Oracle Linux Likes & Dislikes
Zero-downtime patching is the most important feature for us when we need to patch the kernel or deal with critical vulnerabilities etc. without rebooting. The very high-performance that the kernel offers is also key. Even our most intensive workloads are easily handled and it scales well. The unified console to schedule our patching is very pleasant to work with. It's a very cost-effective solution, we get a world-class hypervisor and even a batteries-included k8s stack for a fair price.
Easy to install, no extend HW requirements, designed for departmental approach
I guess the best aspect for the team and myself at the time was that it integrated well with Oracles ecosystem which is one of the reason we considered it as that was part of our stack. Kernel updates, security patches, and package management are well structured making it suitable for production envs.
The console is a bit clunky and takes some getting used to, we see it can be a bit of a learning curve for new colleagues. Documentation is not always as clear, some information is hidden in huge pdfs or documentation pages. Making it hard to find what you're looking for. The platform is quite opinionated towards other products from this vendor, which is fine but can be annoying when you're still in the process of migrating or when you need to keep some external resources.
Advanced features, live motion, storate motion, distribuited capabilities etc etc
Sometimes it can feel more rigid than traditional linux distributions. Certain configs required some more manual effort and the ecosystem felt less flexible when compared to community driven distributions that had more up to date patches for certain functionalities.
