Market Presence: Infrastructure Monitoring Tools, Network Automation Platforms

Overview

Product Information on SolarWinds Observability

Updated 15th April 2024

What is SolarWinds Observability?

SolarWinds Observability is a SaaS offering built to extend visibility across the cloud-native, on-prem, and hybrid technology stack, enabling DevOps, IT ops, and Cloud Ops teams to spend more time developing new, modern applications and infrastructures, fuel innovation while continuing to meet SLAs and exceed customer expectations in legacy on-prem and hybrid IT via a single, unified offering.

SolarWinds Observability Pricing

SolarWinds Observability is delivered and priced as a SaaS solution with pricing based on the specific functionalities purchased—network observability, infrastructure observability, database observability, application observability, digital experience observability (synthetics and real user experience monitoring priced separately), and log observability. You can purchase one or more of the functionalities and expand as your needs evolve without any disruption or additional deployment.

“A monitoring "Jack of all trades, master of none"”

Solarwinds does the basics of monitoring well, but it can often be clunky, slow and unintuitive. It does the basics of what you'd expect a monitoring tool to do, well, in terms of polling, general ping and snmp feedback of devices, but you will spend most of your time waiting for it to load or refresh, or getting frustrated in trying to organise different graphs and views of the data you want. The tooling in theory is great, but it is hamstrung by it's GUI and slow nature. It also appears to be a product that requires a lot of attention in terms of patching/hotfixes.

Flexible dashboards and integration set SolarWinds apart.

    May 8, 2026
My experience with SolarWinds has been very good, especially in environments that needed to consolidate infrastructure, application, and network monitoring into a single view. The platform delivers good operational visibility and greatly assists in the proactive identification of incidents, particularly in hybrid operations with on-premises and cloud environments.

It offers a fairly broad view of the environment, which is useful when dealing with hybrid or multicloud systems. This helps to clearly identify problems, especially regarding performance and logical failures.

My overall experience with solarwinds observability has been positive, in terms of system integration, configuration management and automation. Signigicantly enhances cross-domain monitoring and simplifies correlation of events across systems. From a configuration management perspective, solarwinds observability offers flexible configuration options for monitoring policies, alert thresholds and data sources. Overall, solarwinds is a capable and reliabe solution for organisations seeking integrated monitoring and automation.

Performance of SolarWinds Observability Across Market Features

SolarWinds Observability Likes & Dislikes

Like

1) While many observability tools are built exclusively for the cloud, SolarWinds excels at Hybrid Contextualization. 2) SolarWinds has integrated advanced database performance DNA directly into the observability workflow.

Like

The IPAM tooling built into Solarwinds is OK, but you can get better products dedicated to that. In terms of monitoring, the simple stuff such as ping and snmp polling is easy enough to configure. Getting devices hooked into Solarwinds is managable.

Like

In my opinion, SolarWinds' strengths are: 1. Ease of monitoring hybrid environments, including servers, network devices, cloud workloads, and critical business applications. 2. Good integration capabilities with already established tools in the SolarWinds ecosystem, which facilitates the gradual evolution of the monitoring environment. 3. Highly flexible dashboards and alerts, helping operations teams identify bottlenecks and failures more quickly.

Dislike

1) While the data is all in one place, the navigation logic feels inconsistent when moving from a deep-dive network path (NetPath) to an application trace. The seam between the infrastructure-heavy view and the developer-centric APM view can lead to a disjointed troubleshooting experience.

Dislike

The UI is slow and clunky. You will spend most of your time waiting for Solarwinds to refresh, or trying to figure out why your graphs aren't working as expected. It can be difficult and frustrating to set up custom configurations. It feels like it is trying to do too many things, almost Jack of All Trades, instead of being a master of one.

Dislike

What I dislike most about SolarWinds are: 1. In very large environments, fine-tuning alert configuration and event correlation can require significant operational effort to avoid notification overload. 2. The interface has evolved considerably, but some areas still offer a less intuitive experience for users new to the platform. 3. The licensing model can become expensive as the number of monitored devices, metrics, and integrations grows.
