1) Ease of deployment - upon contract signing, they took care of everything. 2) Customization - I needed a very specific service for a finite period of time that was not originally presented as an option. StarWind accommodated my needs. 3) Price - Usually, customization leads to an increased cost, but not in this case.

Installation is not too complicated and use of old hardware key

The Virtual SAN software plays well with most any hardware, and is very flexible. Keeping our costs down is always a top priority for small organizations such as ours. Virtual SAN is a much more cost effective option than new hardware by a large margin.

Our changing infrastructure mandates leaving the on-prem servers being managed by StarWind, so we won't be able to partner with them going forward.

A Little hard to find help

The learning curve to implement can be very steep. Solid knowledge and understanding of advanced networking is needed in most cases. I found myself going over the documentation very frequently. Support is also limited.

A reliable SAN alternative

Once setup, it is a solid alternative to having a separate SAN server. The free version is very generous, letting you use it perpetually for up to 3 nodes, but you are locked out of the GUI. It's a little tricky setting it up with the provided Powershell scripts, but it seems stable and reliable once that's completed.
