A responsive System, Community and Company which come together to support Weird & Uncommon Use Cases Beyond Traditional NAS Systems

    5.0
    Nov 26, 2025
Both installing, configuring and using it went effortlessly, even though my use case goes further then 'just a NAS system'. I happily use it to host virtualized environments and docker images for (shared) AI workloads though the connected GPUs. It does what I need it to do and with some tinkering a lot more. Truly above and beyond. Both the community and the company are more responsive and helpful then what I initially anticipated, and even as a 'plain unimportant' user I am heard and my (uncommon) use cases are heard and taken into account on the roadmap.

The IxSystem's team was really helpful and professional in getting us into production for our first TrueNAS enterprise M30HA shelf. As a medium sized Telecommunications Provider we had a mixed requirement for in-house storage on systems and to support our customer facing private cloud Offering. Configuring File level Shares and ISCSI block is equally simple to configure. One appliance from TrueNAS is able to perform all functions. from Block level to File storage. Neatly organized

TrueNAS Enterprise Likes & Dislikes

Like

Having previously used the community versions of the operating system, first FreeNAS and then TrueNAS, as we expanded and modernized our infrastructure, we decided to acquire a TrueNAS Enterprise product. TrueNAS Enterprise has proven to be a mature, highly robust, and reliable product, and the manufacturer is capable of offering enterprise-class post-sales support. The administration interface is clear and intuitive, allowing for simple and effective management of routine tasks. The Linux-based platform uses Open ZFS as the volume backend, adding an additional level of reliability and resilience. Full support for all major storage types, combined with an efficient sales and support network, makes TrueNAS Enterprise a solution with an excellent quality/price ratio.

Mostly the user interaction. On the product side, I have a ridiculously easy dashboard which tells me at a glance what I need to know, what I need to do and where to do it. Menu's and UI are exceptionally thought through. On the company side, the advisory counsil (recurring meeting with TrueNAS management & users, I am one of the latter category) where we - the users - get to voice our opinions on features, roadmap, market approach and strategic direction (but also on which stickers are cooler) is exceptional. But most importantly of all, in essence it's a NAS system. It houses files. I have not lost a single file or document since using TrueNAS. It does what it needs to do exceptionally well without hassle, difficulties or complaints.

Like

One Appliance from TrueNAS is able to perform all functions, Private cloud for customers and Internal operations use and file shares. Veeam integration is crucial to our Business continuity and its TrueNAS supports this. Great speed performance and using ZFS file system really well. M30HA shelf previously did not have JBOD support , but IxSystems released a new controller supported in my M30HA Shelf with JBOD support. I can now upgrade my environment further.

Dislike

We didn't encounter any particular issues. The only small issue to report was a certain mechanical resistance when inserting some disks into the slots, due to a slight deformation of the tray sheet metal near the side of the disk. The problem, likely due to an inaccurate disk installation, was resolved with simple finger pressure.

Dislike

Since I am using outdated hardware (HP ML350p gen8) BUT fully 'decked out' with max RAM max CPU max HDD max GPU, sometimes drivers and compatibility require some finesse. Secondly, I would have preferred the development of a GPU widget to go a bit faster, and thirdly (but this really is a minor minor minor thing and completely irrelevant) it would be helpful (for my specific setup) that the connected monitor could show the dashboard at all times.

Dislike

Understanding ZFS raid structures is a steep learning curve
