“A reliable virtual desktop solution that works well for growing, remote teams but requires thoughtful setup and expectations.”

Overall, our experience with Amazon WorkSpaces has been positive. It has helped us standardize work environments and onboard new team members quickly, especially in a remote-first setup. The service is reliable for day-to-day work and fits well with our existing AWS infrastructure. That said, it's not completely frictionless. Performance can vary depending on connection quality and workload, and some aspects of the user experience feel more geared toward technical users. Despite that, it has met our core needs and has been a dependable solution overall.

“Spotty Connections and Workflow Disruptions Experienced With AWS Workspaces for Engineers”

2.0
Mar 16, 2026
AWS workspace has been far from ideal and does not feel suitable for day-to-day collaboration as a Software Engineering. We used it as an alternative way to provide secure, remotely manageable workstations for our remote employees, in lieu of a dedication work laptop. While it does provide minimal latency and allows us to scale a provision each workstation independently, the spotty connections and lack of continuous stream support mean that doing online conferencing, for example, was not possible. In the end, developers had to have a duo setup between using workspaces for some coding work and native desktop for remote collaboration which defeats the whole purpose of our needs of having a secured, managed workstation.

Remote work experience improved but affected by bugs and slowness

    Feb 2, 2026
My personal experience with the product has been satisfactory because it has allowed us to create a new way of working remotely without needing to invest in powerful hardware. However, we have experienced many bugs in the product, which we have duly reported to the manufacturer's support, causing some problems with a few users.

Performance of Amazon WorkSpaces Across Market Features

Amazon WorkSpaces Likes & Dislikes

Like

- Easy and fast provisioning of work environments for new employees - Strong integration with AWS services and existing cloud infrastructure - Centralized control and security without relying on local hardware - Flexibility to scale up or down as the grows or changes.

Like

- AWS workspaces are easy to set up, provision and scale - AWS was a faster deployment option and does work out of the box. No need to buy ship expensive hardware across different countries - AWS workspaces was already included as part of our AWS suite and maintaining the service with our account manager was straightforward

Like

The integration with Active Directory and the ability to use multi factor authentication (MFA) are critical for our security posture. I also appreciate the Auto-stop feature which helps manage costs by only charging for the hours the virtual desktops are actually being used

Dislike

- Occasional latency, especially with heavier applications or multiple monitors - User experience is not very intuitive for non-technical users - Limited customization from the end-user perspective - Troubleshooting often requires IT involvement

Dislike

- As mentioned above connections were spotty at best which was constantly disrupting productivity for our Engineers - in addition, the spotty connection and underlying workspace did not support video conferencing. Which required our developers to run video conferences on their own native machines and switch back and forth to AWS workspaces. This defeated the whole purpose of us managing our employee's workstations remotely - While latency was minimal at times, the input latency is noticeable and it did have a negative impact on the overall throughput of the Engineers that were using AWS workspaces vs the ones that were able to work on a native machine

Dislike

The initial setup for the networking side (VPC, directory service, and NAT Gateways) can be complex for teams that aren't already AWS experts. Also, while the PCoIP and WSP protocols are good, users in high latency regions may ocassionally experience minor lag during graphic intensive tasks.
