Flexible platform enhances engagement, but advanced reporting remains a challenge

    Jul 22, 2026
My overall experience with Canvas LMS has been outstanding because it gives our institution a reliable, modern and flexible digital foundation for our online degree programs and blended courses. The main reason I stand behind this software is that it makes learning accessible and straightforward for both faculty and students, which directly improves student retention and overall course completion. Having an intuitive platform ensures that instructors can focus on quality teaching and student interaction rather than wasting valuable time battling clunky technology. Several key areas have worked exceptionally well for our distance education operations, especially personalization, mobile access and collaboration tools. Personalization options allow instructors to tailor learning modules, custom homepages and study paths to fit different subject matters and teaching styles, while giving students clean dashboards with automated to do lists to keep them on track. Mobile access is top tier, as dedicated mobile apps for students and faculty let users turn in assignments, review grading rubrics, participate in discussions and check notifications right from their phones. Furthermore, the collaboration tools like discussion boards, group project spaces and peer review features create an active, engaging virtual classroom environment that keeps online students connected with their peers and instructors. Behind the scenes, the API integration and user management capabilities have made running campus-wide digital learning smooth for our technical team. Powerful API integrations allow us to seamlessly link Canvas with our student information systems, video conferencing software, plagiarism checkers, and cloud storage accounts without manual data transfers. Meanwhile, the robust user management system makes it easy to assign specific administrative roles, manage faculty and teaching assistant permissions, and handle large term enrollments across dozens of departments securely.

Canvas LMS Likes & Dislikes

Like

I like many features of Canvas LMS because it provides a reliable, easy to navigate environment for our digital courses and online programs. This makes the delivery of online education smooth for our facility while keeping remote students engaged and connected to their coursework every day. One of the features I like is the user friendly interface, which makes navigating courses and accessing instructional materials straightforward for everyone. Because the platform's layout is clean and simple, both new students and faculty can jump right in and find their assignments, syllabus or grade updates without needing hours of technical training, which helps lower student drop rates early in the term. Another feature I like is the strong mobile application, which gives our distance learners complete flexibility in how they complete their education. Since many of our students balance coursework with jobs and family, having a dependable mobile app means they can check course announcements, review lecture notes or submit discussions right from their smartphones wherever they are. Another feature I like is the wide integration of support, which allows us to connect all over essential digital tools directly into the learning platform. Being able to effortlessly link video conferencing software, plagiarism detection tools, and our student information system into one place creates a unified virtual environment for our instructors and saves our team a ton of administrative effort.

Dislike

The biggest issue I experienced was the quiz feature not transferring properly between school years. The quiz would transfer without questions and I would have to individually add each question to its own question bank. It was a recurring problem that took nearly three years to fix. Gradebook organization can also be somewhat unintuitive as it doesn't seem to follow a chronological order.
