Market Presence: Backup and Data Protection Platforms, Backup as a Service

Overview

Product Information on Cohesity DataProtect

Updated 13th October 2025

What is Cohesity DataProtect?

Cohesity DataProtect is software designed for comprehensive data backup and recovery across various environments including on-premises, cloud, and hybrid infrastructures. The software supports the protection and management of virtual machines, databases, files, containers, and SaaS workloads. It enables policy-based automation for backup, fast restoration, and orchestration of disaster recovery processes. By consolidating data silos, the software streamlines operations and reduces complexity associated with multiple point products. Cohesity DataProtect addresses business needs for reliable data protection, rapid recovery from disruptions, and secure management of sensitive information while supporting regulatory compliance requirements through features such as encryption, data immutability, and audit logging.

Cohesity DataProtect Pricing

Cohesity DataProtect software uses a subscription-based pricing model that is typically structured according to capacity, the number of protected workloads, or appliances. The software can be licensed for deployment on-premises or in the cloud, with pricing tiers based on storage capacity, features, and deployment options.

CRITICAL

“Security Gaps Identified in Backup Tool Due to Lack of Segregation Features”

2.0
Jan 27, 2026
As part of a Network team, I saw such a product coming to me without a valid RFP. Unfortunately, we do have a highly regulated infrastructure and Cohesity is struggling to follow our standards. It might be a nice tool, but from a security perspective the product is incredibly naive. Segmentation of activities (backup/ admin) is complicated as the system is missing a real out of band solution.

Cohesity has allowed us to unify our backup data into a single platform and enabled us to move away from aging systems with high maintenance costs. The product offerings are straightforward, and there aren't any hidden costs that we've seen in our first four months of ownership.

Cohesity DataProtect Likes & Dislikes

Like

The centralized cloud management of all of our clusters through Helios and the flexibility of options with the hardware that we can deploy the OS on. We've also enjoyed the flexibility with pool licensing for all of our clusters, rather than having to pay for all available storage at a location, whether consumed or not.

Like

The web GUI is modern. Now, the system behind the scenes is lagging behind. It's a regular Linux without a required hardening enforcement.

Like

Centralized management with no vendor lock-in and flexible storage options. Cost was equivalent to our maintenance costs on previous backup solutions. Backup is designed as forever forward. No synthetic backups or complicated aging.

Dislike

We've had some issues with the cluster deployment on the white box servers, primarily with the requirements for IPMI and NTP both needing to be configured and reachable prior to the cluster deploying correctly, even though we do not utilize IPMI due to the security concerns that it carries. The only other issue that we've run into is the cost of professional services for the installation of the hardware. We have since opted to install the units ourselves and work with support to troubleshoot any issues that come up during a self-service install.

Dislike

Insecure and inaccurate for a segregated environment. MTU is badly managed. If a firewall is present in path, solution is struggling.

Dislike

Implementation for the on-prem portion was difficult to get scheduled and completed. Seemed to take over a month to get an engineer who wanted to do more than talk about implementation rather than do the implementation.
