“Inconsistent Support and Feature Gaps Emerge With ExtremeCloud IQ Wireless Solutions”

3.0
Apr 25, 2026
Extreme Networks is a great partner willing to work with us in many ways. They provide GTAC support, a personal account executive and engineer, as well as access to their internal teams for troubleshooting and bug fixes. We use Extreme APs and XIQ for our Wi-Fi. Everyone at Extreme is very friendly and approachable, and willing to go the extra mile for their customers, even negotiating discounts directly or giving away demo equipment. GTAC is unfortunately a mixed bag, with inconsistency in the technical abilities of the support engineers. Advanced sysadmins will quickly learn XIQ better than the average GTAC engineer and require support from the XIQ developers. On the plus side, GTAC is always available by phone. The APs themselves are cheaper relative to other vendors yet provide a good enough experience for our users. ExtremeCloud IQ (XIQ) itself is very feature-rich with many possible customizations of 802.11 features that other vendors abstract away. Full CLI access is available, with an abundance of troubleshooting options for advanced admins. Unfortunately, some of the fancier and less used security features are poorly implemented and buggy. There are persistent QA issues with Extreme's XIQ software development and we have had to open many bug reports. There are also major gaps in the alerting capabilities of XIQ when compared to other wireless vendors. Recently we have also had some communication issues with Extreme regarding AP lifecycle management which has hurt our opinion of the company.

Dislike

The XIQ development cycle could use some improvement. Some APs ship missing features which are added later in a patch, and while there are many features, some features are reportedly not implemented properly with even GTAC recommending turning them off. We have also experienced some bugs which can take a long time to fix. Some more QA would be helpful. Extreme's wireless offering is largely missing the robust alerting features offered by its competitors. For example, if a DHCP/DNS server servicing the wireless clients fails, there is no ability to get an email alert from XIQ. This is the biggest issue we have when comparing XIQ wireless with other vendors, who all implement robust alerting and monitoring. As of the time of this review, Extreme is shifting over from ExtremeCloud IQ to PlatformOne, and prioritizing development. In my humble opinion, ExtremeCloud IQ could still use some QA around some of the advanced features. There has been conflicting information regarding which AP models will be supported by the new UI. Some GTAC technicians are absolutely brilliant Wifi experts in the field for many years, however some seem less familiar with Wifi and Extreme's platforms. Quality of assigned technicians varies greatly, although I usually have a good experience. You can call in directly and work with someone with relatively little wait time in the US.

Dislike

so far no issues
