“Effective Application Defense Hampered by Intricate Navigation and Steep Learning Curve”

Our overall experience with the Imperva Application Security Platform has been positive from a security outcome perspective. It provides a comprehensive and powerful suite of tools from their industry-leading WAF to effective bot and DDoS protection all under one roof. Platform has significantly hardened our application security posture and gave us confidence that our critical web assets are well-defended. However, this powerful protection is let down by a management console that feels clunky and fragmented, preventing it from being a truly seamless and intuitive experience for our security team.

“Enhanced Support Following Acquisition Contrasts With Ongoing User Interface Limitations”

3.0
Jul 15, 2025
Since the Thales acquisition of Imperva, customer support and interaction has been absolutely phenomenal. The team at Thales is very proactive with helping to ensure the customer is aware of what features are available, troubleshooting issues, and making the customer feel as though they've been heard. That said, the product itself could be considered a little lacking. New features appear to be released with the notion of a goal and perhaps some client direction, but without seeing the vision to a full conclusion prior to being released. While meetings with product managers are helpful, it does appear like the path is set and the meetings are less about listening and understanding needs and more about instructing as to the new features' capabilities. Similarly, pre-existing products suffer from user interface flaws and an almost black box approach to logic - knowledge of how the product works that seems to have been lost in the transition to Thales.

Imperva Application Security Platform Likes & Dislikes

Like

The best aspect is the great quality and reliability of core security engines. Imperva's WAF is best-in-class; its out-of-the-box rule sets and virtual patching capabilities are incredibly effective at stopping attacks with a very low rate of false positives. Having integrated bot protection and DDoS mitigation within the same platform is also a major advantage, as it provides layered defense without the complexity of managing multiple vendors. We trust the platform to do its primary job of stopping threats and it does that very well.

Like

Ultimately, Imperva's Application Security Platform functions as a solid, enterprise-scalable solution. It allows for centralized management and provides powerful functionality without needing a large, dedicated support team on staff. Configuration is usable and duties can be shared amongst application developers, network teams, cloud teams, and security teams. Customer support has been incredible and has truly become a highlight.

Like

The platform is easy to use and intuitive, which allowed us to get up and running quickly with minimal effort. The setup for onboarding a new site into WAF was very straightforward, which allowed us to deploy a production site into WAF with little work on our end. The support team is very knowledgeable and the response time is great. The product is reliable and very effective. Their knowledge base and support KB's are well written to help new customers.

Dislike

Our biggest issue is the user interface and the overall management experience. The dashboard feels intricate and is not intuitive. Navigating between the different modules (like WAF, Bot Management, API Security) can feel disjointed, as if you are using separate products that have been loosely stitched together rather than a truly unified platform. This creates a steep learning curve and makes simple, day-to-day tasks like investigating an alert or fine-tuning a policy more cumbersome and time-consuming than they ought to be.

Dislike

The main issue tends to be the user interface. This is something they're aware of and have dedicated some amount of work to over the last year; however, a full UI redesign is likely in order. The interface feels clunky and leaves the user guessing as to where certain functions exist. Even experienced users seem unable to divine the location of important functions. Reporting functionality is incredibly limited in the UI, with most of the true value coming from the logs after ingesting into a SIEM or other log aggregation tool. While the company seems dedicated to bringing new functionality to the tool and expanding what the tool does, Imperva should truly focus on redesigning the platform before moving forward with new feature-sets.

Dislike

There is very little to dislike overall. More option for customers to create customer report would be a great feature to add.

Imperva: Advanced Bot Protection and Rapid Tech Support Response.

My experience using Imperva has been positive. The GUI is fairly easy to get used to - onboarding new sites and getting the right levels of protection & security. The option to now validate domains using the CNAME option in the GUI is more long term than the TXT record option. Also I find the Thales support excellent - responses are very quick, and the information received is always accurate and valid.

When I joined my current organization ~4 years ago, I have asked for the following: 1. Completely new form of reporting formats, 2. Various types of reports that can hold historical references, 3. Organizing the accounts and internal components, 4. Various approaches to be taken in terms , 5. Strategic and tactical action steps to be taken in various scenarios 6. Asking for an single point of contact engineer to be assigned to our organization 7. Best practices to be reviewed and revised regularly and so on. During all these years, not even once did "team Imperva" ever object instead they have worked tirelessly to accomplish all these details. There are many more very important details, expectations and patterns that were discussed in detail with the customer relation support person and they were all well taken and by her and the team. She lined up her product and other teams to immediately accept the points discussed and pushed them with more vigor. Also I should mention about the sales manager who is very accommodating, assuring and always available for a quick call over the cellphone. I should also mention the names of the engineers that worked/working with me chronologically. They are top of the line, extremely knowledgeable and can speak and understand the client's language. They can be considered "the ninjas with a samurai mindset in the technical and security world" (that in my opinion is a very rare combination). They always amaze us in terms of their adeptness, adaptability and no-excuses approach.
