One of its biggest strengths is how well it integrates with other Microsoft tools, which makes it easy to embed into existing workflows and data environments. It's also very accessible for new users, with a relatively low learning curve for building basic dashboards and reports. The pace of development is another positive, with regular updates and new features being introduced. From a cost perspective, it's also easier to scale across a wider organisation compared to many other enterprise BI tools.
I lke that PowerBI is easy to use for creating dashboards, integrates well with Microsoft tools, and helps turn data into clear and useful insights.
Power BI works very well for most standard reporting use cases. The Data Gateway is working reliably for connecting to on-premise data, we had not so many problems with it. The low-code components are helpful and that viewers can access reports for free is really useful for the rollout in the company. The integration into Teams and Azure is working smoothly. In general for normal enterprise reporting it just works.
The platform can feel less polished in certain areas, particularly when working with more complex data models or advanced use cases. There are times where flexibiltiy feels a bit constrained compared to more mature tools, especially when building highly customised visualisations or calculations. Performance can also vary depending on how well models are structured, and managing content and governance at scale can require careful setup. The user experience is good overall, but not always as consistent across different parts of the platform.
Performance can slow down with large datasets, some customizations are not very intuitive, and advanced features can take time to learn.
As the environment grows bigger, it becomes more complex and harder to maintain. Power Query is in our opinion not necessary, we prefer to do the data manipulation directly in SQL or inside Power BI itself, the extra layer is making things more complicated without real benefit. For real-time or streaming data it is not the right tool. Also, vendor lock-in is something to think about because when you are deep in the Microsoft ecosystem it is not easy to change something. Licensing with Premium capacity can get quite expensive.
