“Reliable, native monitoring for AWS workloads with strong integration capabilities.”

My overall experience with AWS CloudWatch is positive. We use CloudWatch to monitor our managed service platform hosted in the AWS cloud environment, starting with basic instance-level metrics such as CPU utilization and Network I/O etc. For detailed monitoring, we deployed CloudWatch Agent on target servers to enable monitoring of additional metrics including memory utilization, logs, traces, and process or service monitoring. We also use CloudWatch to monitor other AWS services such as storage, database, and load balancer etc as its out-of-the box capability. We have integrated CloudWatch with external tools/systems (like observability tools) to collect monitoring data, configured threshold-based alerts and automated incident creation in our ITSM platform. Overall, CloudWatch provides reliable monitoring capabilities that align well with AWS-based infrastructure requirements.

CRITICAL

“AWS CloudWatch stands out for its accurate alarms but has a steep learning curve”

In my opinion, AWS CloudWatch is a very powerful and stable service, which makes it a very reliable tool for monitoring production elements within our organization. Based on my experience, I've found that it works very well with real-time alerts. However, as an area for improvement, I would highlight that it's not easy to use, and even less so intuitivesomething that needs to be addressed.

CloudWatch Alarms and Logs Insights Simplify Service Monitoring and Issue Detection

I think Amazon CloudWatch is one of the best services provided by AWS because it is used to log our services data from AWS. We have a long experience with CloudWatch logs, and that is amazing because of the connection with all their own services, so it helps us so much to debug the issues as well

Amazon CloudWatch Likes & Dislikes

Like

AWS CloudWatch is a native monitoring service that integrates seamlessly with AWS infrastructure and services. It supports monitoring across a wide range of AWS workloads, including EC2, RDS, LB, S3 and networking services. Integration options are available via APIs and notification services to support external tools (tools such Observability, ITSM) and automation. Custom dashboards can be created to visualize metrics for centralized visibility of AWS services.

Like

I would highlight its alarm system; it's excellent, fast, and accurate. It's very scalable and stable, which gives you great peace of mind when using it. Furthermore, it's easily customizable; for example, its dashboard is highly adaptable to your needswe've customized it extensively.

Like

In our experience, the best thing about CloudWatch is connectivity with their own services. For example, if I need logs for the Lambda, I don't need to attach the event to the service; it comes by default with CloudWatch logs. Then we have the CloudWatch Logs Insights service, which is basically a query for the CloudWatch data. For example, sometimes we have millions of data in our backend server or UI server, so if we need to find the specific logs, then it is very hard to go through all the log groups and all. At the time we used these log insights; it helped us a lot to find it. Another thing is alarms are basically used to give you an alert when your point is hit. This helps us to continue monitoring the performance of our services, and there are many different services as well.

Dislike

CloudWatch dashboard interface is relatively basic and offers limited customization for advanced visualization needs. Building highly customized or complex dashboards requires additional effort and configuration. By default, CloudWatch metrics are scoped at the region level, which makes centralized monitoring across multiple regions and accounts more complex. Aggregating and visualizing data across large, multi-account environments requires additional configuration and management overhead.

Dislike

Areas for improvement include its steep learning curve, especially if you're unfamiliar with AWS and it's one of the first AWS products you've tested. We had a bad experience once with the service's cost; it was generating a lot of logs without us realizing it, and when the bill arrived, we learned to use it more carefully. This is something a company like AWS should address. Furthermore, after testing other solutions before and after, I find its interface very complex and difficult to understand. Compared to other AWS services, I don't know why this one wasn't developed in the same way.

Dislike

While excellent for starting up, CloudWatch can become expensive when we start adding in the logs, and logs grow, store the logs for long periods of time, and use custom metrics, which can increase our monthly bill. And sometimes the UI for the console can feel very cluttered. It takes time for the new team members to get used to it, and using logs insights also takes time when you are new because of the query syntax. It is not same like simple sql it is hard in the beginning. When you start working continuously you feel more familiar with it
