Commvault pretty much has you cover or anything you want to backup, SQL servers, FIle Servers, VMs, AD, it can also replicate your backups and perform automatic recovery for testing and compliance requirements , their Microsoft Entra integration and O365 is really good
Deduplication and compression have reduced our storage costs significantly, and the ability to manage a hybrid environment saves us from using two systems or toolsets. The management console is also useful and does everything needed.
Commvault is comprehensive in terms of features. The three areas we appreciate are standard, traditional data protection (backup/recovery), data security, and data privacy. We also like the flexibility Commvault provides in a hybrid environment with cloud data protection.
Because you can do so much with the tool, its management can become a nightmare. I like to describe Commvult as it's and airplane and not a car, it can take you almost anywhere you want to go, far beyond what most tools can do, but flying an airplane requires trained personnel, fuel, constant maintenance and operational discipline, if what you really need is just a car to get from point A to point B, there are simpler products that will get the job done with far less overhead
It has a steep learning curve and was quite complex to set up for our needs. We also noticed some lag and sluggishness to the Web UI. Having to interact with our service provider for any troubleshooting of issues or errors does add an element of delay to fixing a problem.
Commvault can be a little more taxing to maintain due to its complexity. We have evaluated other products that seem to be easier to administer. For the cloud environments, Commvault requires more configuration expertise to achieve the same result as on-prem. We had some challenges with the cloud configuration. Commvault has a lot of flexibility and features, but it carries a higher learning curve, and we've relied on external support for configurations.

We've used Commvault Cloud (previously Metallic) for multiple customers over the past 5 years. It has always been bulletproof. The setup has always been straight forward, and the licensing has been clear to understand. We've always had a great experience with Commvault account managers, increasing storage, licensing, etc. Backing up cloud workloads uses the public API, so you don't have VM-level backups traversing the edge firewall. Commvault cloud is a great backup and data protection tool which allows companies to manage their data backup very efficiently and easily after the configuration setup. It is good for companies with good amount of workload as it is very performing tool in order to take backups and recovery. Threatwise is a great feature which scan the production data and alert us with data anomalies and malware data. Little difficult in order of setting it up for the first time.
