I like that Planner works seamlessly with Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, SharePoint and To Do. This makes managing work across tools smoother if your organization is already in the Microsoft ecosystem.
It belongs to the same ecosystem of Microsoft as it is used at the company, it's fairly easy to learn how to use it even if you haven't used Kanban boards before and a resume of the progress.
1. Seamless integration with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and other M365 tools 2. User-friendly interface that is easy for teams to adopt quickly 3. Visual task tracking using boards, buckets, and progress charts 4. Real-time collaboration and task updates across team members 5. Easy task assignment with due dates, checklists, and attachments
Planner also works well for small to medium projects, but can feel simplistic for complex multi-team programs or projects requiring detailed task relationships. There's no built-in way to log or estimate time on tasks without third-party hacks or Power Automate add-ins. Teams sometimes struggle with too many email notifications and a lack of fine-grained control over alerts. Searching tasks across multiple plans or filtering by custom metadata isn't as powerful as in more robust PM tools.
As mentioned before, the lack of visual dependencies within tasks of the project, it cannot be personalized by adding information needed and the notifications aren't so easily manageable since sometimes it can either show you all the updates or you can miss some of the important ones if you aren't checking it up regularly.
1. Limited advanced project management features (e.g., dependencies, timeliness/Gantt charts) 2. Lack of customization in workflows and task views. 3. Reporting and analytics capabilities are basic and not very flexible 4. Performance can slow down with large or complex plans 5. Limited integration with non-Microsoft tools compared to competitors
