A pro of using Open edX is that it is open-source and that means the system can be adjusted to meet our institutions requirements. This is relevant in the development of innovative pedagogy and building compelling online education courses.
With Open edX I could easily follow the course at my own pace and according to my interest level. The interactive features, the incorporation of multimedia and the achievements made in the course made me remain focused.
Open edX is very flexible in its design and I was able to modify the platform to meet the requirements of our courses. The integrated discussion forums help create a student community which is useful in some classes.
Open edX is relatively complex for people who have no technical background. Situations may arise where this leads to conflicts with other programs or functions as such or may take a while longer to set up.
Sometimes it took several tries to locate the course material or setting that I was looking for. Such searching may be tiring and disturbing to the flow of learning.
I have observed that Open edX is not very good at maintaining students' interest over a longer period. There are not many features that can be considered as engaging, interactive and entertaining to make using the platform appealing for students.
