We especially value the real-time end-to-end visibility across our applications, the speed and accuracy of root cause analysis with clear actionable insights, and the strong business transaction monitoring that helps us track and improve the user experience.

Unique concept for monitoring applications.

Business transaction discovery is a really good feature. Unlike other tools that just show the endpoints, AppDynamics automatically groups our traffic into logical flows. This makes it incredibly easy to set performance baselines for specific critical paths in our automation suite. The ability to upload custom Selenium or Python scripts for synthetic monitoring means we can reuse our existing automation logic for production monitoring.

What like less about the solution is that the initial setup and configuration can be quite complex, the pricing can be relatively high compared to some alternatives, and it requires a certain level of expertise to fully take advantage of all its capabilities.

Injecting the agent is difficult in Kubernetes.

The UI feels dated compared to newer observability platforms. Navigating between the end user monitoring tab and the backend APM nodes can be clunky and requires too many clicks. Also, the licensing for synthetic sessions is separate and can get expensive if you want to run high frequency tests from multiple global locations.

Synthetic Monitoring Integration Supports Automation with UI and Cost Limitations Noted

AppDynamics is our go-to for deep dive performance analysis, especially during our load testing cycles. As an SDET, I heavily rely on the browser synthetic monitoring to run Python-based front-end test scripts on a schedule that simulates user flows such as from logging in to checking out. It excels at connecting front-end latency from the browser RUM directly to the backend database queries, which helps me prove to developers that the slowness is indeed an API issue and not just a heavy client-side script.

The Cisco AppDynamics team was great until they acquired by ThousandEyes and started rebranding everything. Once that started, it was really hard to get in contact or even know who our customer care person was or who we should contact for issues like licensing.

AppDynamics is an amazing tool to keep an eye on everything happening in your application. From dashboards all the way to transaction tracing and alerts, it gives you full visibility. Extremely helpful in spotting issues before users notice. It's packed with features, so there is a learning curve. Once familiar, however, it is a go-to for any team serious about app performance.
