What is Microsoft Intune?

Microsoft Intune is a software designed for managing devices and applications within an organization. It provides cloud-based tools that allow administrators to configure policies, control access to company resources, and ensure compliance with corporate requirements across mobile phones, tablets, and computers. The software supports deployment, update management, and secure distribution of applications while offering monitoring capabilities for security and usage. By offering features for data protection and device configuration, Microsoft Intune assists organizations in maintaining security standards and productivity for users who access business resources remotely or in office environments.

Microsoft Intune Pricing

The Microsoft Intune software utilizes a subscription-based pricing model with options for standalone plans or bundled offerings as part of Microsoft 365 and Enterprise Mobility and Security suites. Pricing varies based on the number of users and features selected, with monthly per-user charges applied for access to device management and security capabilities.

As the CISO of a tech startup, our overall experience with Microsoft Intune has been very positive. Especially as we are working towards ISO 27001 certification. It provides the essential framework for enforcing policies across all company devices, making endpoint management secure and auditable. The service's high availability and performance have allowed us to implement enterprise-grade security controls without disrupting our team's productivity.

CRITICAL

“Integration and Workflow Strengths Offset By Device Action Delays and poor Remote Assistance tools In Microsoft Intune”

Oct 16, 2025
The reason behind my rating is because I neither hate nor love Microsoft Intune. I think it's a great product for my organization because we are already so deeply invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, it just makes sense for us to go with Microsoft Intune for managing our devices. I really enjoy having a product that integrates so deeply with other products so in this case having integrations between Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Intune, and Microsoft Defender is perfect to cover our user and device surface. Microsoft's documentation around Intune is pretty good for the most part and I was able to learn it on my own and implement it for my company with little to no huge roadblocks. Once we got a process down, migrating our devices over was easy and I really enjoyed the easy interface across all platforms for configuring profiles and applications. Some of the pain points of Intune though is the speed of device actions and syncing, slow release of updates, and unclear communication from Microsoft. There are definitely areas where Microsoft should have better answers, such as licensing. It's still very unclear how userless licensing works with Intune and if all users need to be licensed for a feature even if they don't use it. An example would be when you purchase an additional service such as Enterprise App Catalog, it activates the feature for the entire tenant meaning you could deploy these apps to users who don't have an Enterprise App Management license. Now of course that seems incorrect, but it works. Microsoft should have a better explanation and a better process for licensing these types of services in a way that makes sense to the customer. Overall, I have really enjoyed my experience with Intune and I feel it is easy to learn and understand, however there are several pain points that need adjusted.

Like

The feature we value most is Intune's deep integration with other M365 products: Azure AD Conditional Access (Entra ID), Microsoft Defender for Endpoint (EDR), Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Security, etc... This powerful combinaison allows us to enforce Zero Trust principles by ensuring that only Compliant, healthy devices can access sensitive company data.

Like

Some of the standout features of Intune include Autopilot, Settings Catalog, and the unified interface across platforms. In terms of Autopilot, this is the feature that really got me into Intune. I was used to the days of creating images for device models and uploading those images to SCCM task sequences. Autopilot completely changed the game, allowing us to just use vanilla Windows installs and Autopilot did the rest over top of the OOBE. This has completely improved my company's workflow rather than having to take the time to package on Windows images and wait for the task sequence to complete. Being able to order a machine and have it arrive ready to be Autopiloted with little to no interaction is a great workflow. I think Autopilot is one of Microsoft Intune's most appealing features. Next, I really enjoy the Settings Catalog because I am able to be as granular as I want with it. I can have one big settings catalog policy, or I can create several smaller policies. I think pushing towards Settings Catalog being the standard is the way going forward as it supports a wide range of settings. An improvement to the Setting Catalog's filtering and search functionality could be helpful as the search can be hit or miss and it can sometimes be hard to find settings. Having tags / categories for settings in the setting catalog could be a good way to help it be more user friendly. Lastly, the unified interface is very helpful because once you know how to manage one platform, the rest are easy to manage as well since all of the policy and app configuration are labeled the same and follow similar formats. Once you learn how to navigate Intune, it's easy to find what you're looking for.

Like

I like the seamless integration with other services of Microsoft (e.g. Defender and M365).

Dislike

What we dislike most is the product's significant complexity and steep learning curve. Also, performance could probability get better, to deliver policies faster, and check compliance more often.

Dislike

My biggest issues with Microsoft Intune would be the speed of device actions / syncs and Remote Help. Myself along with my colleagues have all agreed on the fact that Intune actions can be so slow for the Windows platform. When you send a wipe command or a restart command, for example, there is no telling when that command is going to hit the device. Sometimes it's instant, sometimes 5 minutes, sometimes 20, sometimes it feels like never. Compared to managing Apple devices, sending a wipe or restart command happens within 5-10 seconds, it's lightning fast. I'm sure a lot of that lies in the way the Windows operating system works, but Microsoft should put a lot more effort into making these actions faster. I have talked to many frustrated individuals about how slow Intune is and sometimes it can be hard to recommend the product due to the speed of the actions. Compared to other MDM platforms out there, when a policy gets pushed, it almost feels instant how quickly the device got that policy. That is not only good for efficiency, but also for security, as if there is something we need to push or pull back fast, then we can be confident that the action will occur. My next pain point is Remote Help. First, the Remote Help action in Intune to activate a Remote Help session is very inconsistent and often does not send the notification to the end user. Next, it is frustrating to have to enable authenticated sessions to see UAC prompts every single Remote Help session. It is a preference that should be saved so that way our techs don't have to click on it every time. Next, unattended access is a highly requested feature and would benefit us greatly as we are currently paying for another service for unattended access.

Dislike

There are settings that you might configure in different places - so, you can configure these settings in an inconsistent way. Also, there are some settings where you have to deal with YAML/XML, but on the other hand, there seems to be no consistent configuration-as-code way to configure Intune. I wish Microsoft would implement a clear and supported way of using YAML or JSON to configure each and every aspect of Intune in a Git repo, so that I can search in my configuration code for settings and have a clear history of changes.

The software products do what they are supposed to do. We are using many services of Microsoft that are highly integrated. We use Intune to manage all of our devices (Windows, iOS, Android and MacOS) in a cloud-only environment.
