It has the ability to scale. The system can be scaled up for future growth of data as per the requirement increase by the user without compromising performance. It is designed with high availability and fault tolerance in mind. Redundant components and data protection features like RAID that help data remain secure and accessible if any hardware failure happens. It supports integration with cloud services and hybrid cloud environments. It has security features, including data-at-rest encryption, secure multi-tenancy, and role-based access control (RBAC).
ScaleIO provides a massively scalable, clustered storage solution that can grow to many petabytes as demand increases across the enterprise. We have massive build farms in our environment that used to crush traditional storage arrays and overrun everything we threw at it. Weve seen our 6 node SSD cluster hit 150,000 IOPS without a problem. That kind of performance used to only be obtainable on our multi-million dollar XtremeIO environment.
It has the ability to scale up as per the organization's needs. It can scale up from mid to high range environments. It has features like inline compression and deduplication which can help to optimize storage utilization. It provides high availability, robust data protection, and disaster recovery options. It has a simplified management interface which is integrated with Dell Unisphere that helps to monitor & configuration. It has strong integration with VMware. It supports a wide range of protocols (iSCSI, Fibre Channel, NFS ).
The configuration and setup process might be complex for organizations who do not have expertise in Dell Storage. Response and customer support is taking too much time. Integrating with third-party hardware or software systems requires compatibility checks.
The licensing for ScaleIO is confusing, as with many EMC products. There is also very costly per TB overhead for data protection that you have to pay for. As an example; we get 230TB raw out of a 6 ready-node SSD cluster. We pay for 230TB in licensing, but only get about 87TB usable. That really adds to the overall cost of ownership and makes other solutions more attractive from a cost per TB model.
It provides high performance, reliability, and scalability but it is too costly for smaller organizations. The solution has the complexity of managing a full enterprise-level deployment for a smaller organization.
