Overview

Product Information on Azure Virtual WAN

Updated 13th October 2025

What is Azure Virtual WAN?

Azure Virtual WAN is a networking software developed by Microsoft that enables users to securely connect branches, sites, users, and virtual networks through a unified and global networking architecture. The software provides centralized management, routing, and monitoring for connectivity across locations and devices, leveraging automated site-to-site VPN, point-to-site VPN, and ExpressRoute connections. It facilitates optimized transit connectivity, policy enforcement, and traffic flow control within cloud and on-premises environments. Azure Virtual WAN addresses the need for scalable, manageable, and resilient networking infrastructure, supporting integration with third-party network appliances and security solutions to streamline network operations and enhance access across distributed organizations.

Azure Virtual WAN Pricing

Azure Virtual WAN software offers a pricing model based on usage and configuration, including costs for hub deployment, bandwidth, VPN gateways, and other network resources. Charges are applied according to the volume of data processed, specific features utilized, and geographical location of resources. The software provides flexibility for scaling, and pricing may vary depending on service tiers and selected options.

“Zero-Touch Provisioning Enhances Azure Virtual WAN, Integration With AWS Presents Issues”

4.0
Jul 18, 2025
Azure Virtual WAN has been instrumental in managing our SAP RISE Project. We built Branch & Private connectivity (Express Route). Latency is minimal; Azure works effortlessly for small and medium enterprises. However, enterprises with complex routing needs or multi-cloud strategies might have limitations and require extensive planning.

CRITICAL

“vWAN is not bad at all, but it leaves a few things out which might help large enterprises”

3.0
Apr 1, 2025
There are a few starting points - it works and it is fairly easy to use for this direct purpose. But, it is not on par with other similar solutions, private and public address mixups are quite easy and this stems from the actual design of the whole Cloud solution by MS - at least we were told that. Some elements like external route handling can be done better and a few leftovers cost us dearly during migrations.

Azure Virtual WAN Likes & Dislikes

Like

The best feature of Azure Virtual WAN is Zero-Touch Provisioning and Self-Healing Networks by detecting latency spikes in our SD WANs and re-routes the traffic. It also notifies key administrators once an anomaly is detected.

Like

It does the basic thing quite easy and straight forward.

Like

Central network architecture makes it easy to deploy a hub and spoke topology that scales. The ability to integrate security and routing with routing intent makes zero trust security a breeze.

Dislike

Integration with AWS WAN is sometimes troublesome and not efficient to manage a virtual network. Direct Connects and Transit Gateways sometimes dont work efficiently if not designed properly.

Dislike

Route propagation and general external connections are quite challenging when the request is off the beaten path. It seems that the aim was not for a large corporation, although many are looking for multi-cloud solutions making vWAN a necessity

Dislike

Lack of visibility into the underlay makes troubleshooting difficult for those really wanting to understand the core architecture. More advanced troubleshooting tools would be beneficial to advanced administrators.
