GitHub Codespaces

I have a very positive experience using Github codespaces for more than 7 years. It simplifies my development setup by providing a cloud-based code environment. I don't have to worry about code loss or security concerns. It helps to simplify the development process across the team by providing collaborative contribution.

GitHub Codespaces has been a smooth and efficient experience. It offers a cloud-based development setup that feels almost the same as working locally, but without the need to install dependencies. Performance is reliable, with the flexibility to scale resources when needed.

Overall experience has been very positive, especially in terms of onboarding and increase in productivity.

My overall experience with GitHub Code Spaces has been great, as it performs its job exceptionally well with no concerns. Our organization primarily uses GitHub Code Spaces as an end-user for proof of concept scenarios. In my prior organizations, I leveraged it in greater detail. As a decision-maker, I was deeply involved in the selection and implementation of this product. My involvement primarily cantered around high-level considerations such as security, role-based access, enterprise alignment, and billing. While I am not an end-user myself, my team's developers utilize it, I can confirm that we have received no complaints regarding its usage. This product has undeniably helped us achieve significant business goals. A key metric demonstrating its value is the drastic reduction in developer onboarding time. Historically, getting a developer onboarded and ready to work, which involved delivering a laptop, typically took one to two weeks. With GitHub Code Spaces, this process is instantaneous and readily available, eliminating the need to measure in days. While we don't directly equate this to a specific cost, it clearly translates to saving approximately half a month of unit cost per person. This is a substantial gain for the organization. Although the product is not yet fully rolled out for every user, preventing a precise ROI measurement, the underlying business case is strong. I am confident it is helping us save costs, as a product or license cost would typically not consume half a month's unit cost per user.

It's a strong solution for standardizing and accelerating development workflows. The seamless integration with Github, combined with pre-configured dev environments, has significantly reduced setup time and environment drift across the team. It enables faster onboarding and support remote first model.
