IAM gives strong security control system for managing AWS permissions at scale

    4.0
    May 27, 2026
We use AWS IAM regularly for managing developer access, service permissions and deployment workflows across different AWS resources. It's honestly one of those services that becomes essential once infrastructure starts growing. The role based access setup and integration with other AWS services works really well. The biggest challenge is policy management. Debugging permission issues can get frustrating with complex IAM policies or cross account access. Still, once the structure is properly organized, it gives strong control and visibility over access management.

Deciding Factors: AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Vs. Market Average
Performance of AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Across Market Features

AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) Likes & Dislikes

Like

Fine grained permission control is probably the biggest advantage. IAM roles work really well for services and CI/CD workflows without exposing long term credentials. Integration across the AWS ecosystem feels seamless. Multi Factor Authentication support and centralized access management also help a lot for security compliance.

Dislike

Policy management is where I would give the product my first negative point; the policies are difficult to understand and even more difficult to maintain. Sometimes we get access denied errors, and once we couldn't even see which policy was blocking it, and then suddenly it started working again. This undoubtedly caused concern and uncertainty. Finally, I would say that it's such a complex system that a simple failure doesn't have a quick rollback option, generating inconvenience and problems for the organization.
