Dell PowerProtect Data Manager Likes & Dislikes
VMare vsphere/CBR snapshot integration works great- CBT ensures consistent app-aware backups at 15 min RPO every time Central multi-tenant console with auto- discovery scales to 5K VMs easily, REST API tag policies make IaC deployments simple Cyber Recovery Vault WORM retention lock keeps us ransomware-safe, 14 day SLA recovery tests always ready
simple, software-defined, and scalable approach to protecting modern,multi-cloud, and virtual workloads. excellent vmware backup& recovery performance. broad workload coverage ( vmware, kubernets, database,NAS,Cloud) strong deduplication & storage efficiency Policy-driven automation Stable, Reliable Backup operations
Coming from a different environment, PowerProtect Data Manager is much easier to manage with a modern and clean interface. The product also continues to be updated with new features that we are entitled to after an upgrade. Update - Now that a year has passed and I have upgraded the software I would like to comment on that process. The upgrade process is very simple and is done through the GUI. With other products, there are multiple pieces that require manual updates, but upgrading PowerProtect Data Manager is simple; it guides you through the process and basically performs the upgrade for you.
Reporting lacks ML capacity forecasting, 24 hr analytics delay means building custom Splunk dashboards to track trends. Kubernetes CSI drivers not as mature as POrtworx for containe backups, feels underdeveloped there Multi-site policy sync takes 10-15 min during WAN failover across 3 plus locations
Weak compression efficiency Reporting & Dashboard Limitations struggles with large data sets more than 1 TB
1. There are additional machines that need to be spun up for reporting and search, although they are deployed from the GUI which helps. 2. The deployment does take some time and there are multiple pieces to configure. 3. The reports are somewhat limited and are in .csv format. It would be nice to have the option of HTML or a format that displays better in an email. Update - Reporting is still limited with the .csv format. It would be nice to see HTML as an option for email.

PPDM has been solid for our 200+ VM setup - 99.8% backup succes rate, SLA policies cut manual wokr by 40% Power store DD integration gives 25:1 dedupe. Runs stable in daily production without major headaches - Principal System Engineer50M-1B USDSoftwareReview Source
PowerProtect Data Manager: Easily Managed with Modern, Clean Interface
The local sales team has been excellent to work with over the years. Even though sales reps/engineers would change from time to time, there was always a clean handoff. The team is engaged and not only reviews new product offerings that may benefit our company, but also provides updates on existing products to ensure we are getting the full benefit of the products we already own. Update - After using the product for about a year I would like to provide an update. The product is easy to use and we have had very few issues with backup job failures. The integration with VMware makes backups and restores easy as you can perform these tasks directly in vCenter. - Graduate Engineer Traniee1B-10B USDManufacturingReview Source
Advanced Automation Simplifies Backup Scheduling Despite Complex Initial Setup Process
Dell Powerprotect data manager has delivered an impressive and reliable data protection experience across hybrid and multicloud environments. Deployment was smooth, integration with existing VMware and Poweredge infrastructure was seamless, and the backup/restore performance has been consistently strong - Director of IT50M-1B USDEnergy and UtilitiesReview Source
Minimal Human Effort Required for Backup Processes, Though Interface Could Be Improved
PPDM has proven to be a reliable and efficient backup solution in our environment. Since transitioning from our previous backup system, which experienced frequent failures and required constant manual intervention, overall backup operations have significantly improved. Backups are now running consistently and successfully, with minimal need for corrective actions. PPDM is largely hands-off and stable. The intigraitons with our VMware system has also allowed us to remain hands off with several intigraitons between the two systems allowing backups to be copmleted of newly deployed workloads from day one without manually adding them into backup jobs. Overall, PDM has reduced our operational overhead, improved reliability and streamlined backup management compared to our previous solutions. - Director of IT1B-10B USDRetailReview Source
Centralized Console Simplifies Backup Management Across Multiple Workloads with PPDM
PPDM gives us the opportunity to consolidade all backup workloads in a single console, reducing the efforts of the infrastructure teans to manage the backup service. In addition, the time to backup and restore is pretty good and the reports about the service health gives us total control about the solution. The manageament its very simple to add or remove workloads and the integration with third part solutions like VMWare and CyberSense works perfectly.
