About Company
Company Description
Optimal Workshop provides a suite of user research tools aimed at improving design decisions. They offer a platform that aids in understanding customer behavior, subsequently boosting product functionality. The tools made available by the company afford the collection and interpretation of both quantitative and qualitative data, fostering designs that coincide with user objectives. Their offerings include Tree Testing, First-click Testing, Card Sorting, Online Surveys, and Qualitative research tools. The Tree Testing tool, Treejack, assists in solidifying site structure prior to beginning interface design while the First-Click Testing tool identifies potential usability issues in wireframes and prototypes. OptimalSort, the company's Card Sorting tool, streamlines card sorting procedures. Optimal Workshop also provides an expansive online survey platform supporting an array of languages, and Reframer—a Qualitative research tool—that speeds up the research process for expedited results.

Performance of Optimal Workshop Across Market Features
Optimal Workshop Likes & Dislikes
I really like the usability of the product! And the way the results are displayed, they have several different charts and the responses are very well organized, and we are able to export the results.
The card sorting, tree testing, and first click testing methods are simple and easy to learn, even for first timers. Optimal Workshop is one of the most prominent purveyors of these methods in the tooling market, and as such, Optimal Workshop fills an important gap in the tool suite for my team. I appreciate the OW's offering to recruit users, as the more recruitment paths available to me, the better! However, the size of the recruitment pool means that it may be difficult to find enough of a specific user, such as one who currently uses your product, which poses a data quality problem for some studies.
It was easy to set up new tests and preview them with stakeholder to ensure business engagement. The output of results is really powerful and support is given in interpreting results to stakeholders. It's a stable and reliable tool and we found no bugs or glitches when benchmarking against competitor products. It's a solid tool, but hasn't improved significantly in the last few years to keep up with competitors.
The prototype testing feature can be enhanced and could give more power and flexibility to the user.
The prototyping and survey features have less developed functionality compared to the tools that specialize in these methods in the market. Although OW offers these features, they lack some critical functionality such as a variety of survey logic that would be necessary for more advanced research. The basic feature set could satisfy non-research teams who conduct quicker or lower confidence surveys/studies, especially given the all-in-one offering with multiple methods and a recruitment path. OW also works well for teams who are starting up their research practice or have straightforward research requests, but may need to look elsewhere as research maturity evolves, requiring more specific features.
Whilst the interface has improved over the last few years, Optimal Workshop could go further to make it easier to use. I believe OW also needs to release new features to keep up with competitors who seem to be edging away. For example being able to test live sites with intercept surveys is something that would be a really valuable addition to its range of features and one that competitors such as Maze offers. It feels rather expensive too and as such our organisation pays for periods of time for focused studies rather than an ongoing subscription.

Ideal for Early Research, Lacks Depth in Mature Survey Needs
Optimal Workshop is good for some methods and not so much for others. It fills a necessary gap in your tool suite, but is not an all-encompassing solution. Because its sweet spot is in tree tests and card sorts, which determine info architecture and navigation, it's typically not a tool that's needed continuously year after year, but can be critical for a moment in time. - SENIOR PRODUCT DESIGNER50M-1B USDSoftwareReview Source
Crafting Research Studies with Optimal Workshop: An Exploration of Usability
Optimal Workshop is great for launching unmoderated research studies. It is easy to plan and execute. There are several different methods that the user can choose, and all of them are well thought. - RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT MANAGER<50M USDTelecommunicationReview Source
OW struggles to compete in a crowded marketplace
My overall experience is generally good. Optimal Workshop offers a range of services, but where we found it most useful was in the testing of existing navigation hierarchies (Tree testing) and in discovering mental models for prioritising new navigation structures (Card sorting). It's fairly expensive for what you get though. It's straightforward to use and set up tests.
