What is Rippling?

Rippling Global Payroll is a full-service, native global payroll engine that processes pay runs and automatically calculates, files, and pays taxes. Admins can process payroll in 5 days, and view taxes, gross pay, and currency conversions during pay runs. They can also add bonuses, commission, and reimbursements, adjust pay runs after they’ve been submitted, and prorate payroll or run off-cycle pay runs for both domestic and international employees and contractors. Rippling Global Payroll integrates with Rippling Time & Attendance, Rippling Spend Management, Rippling Benefits Administration, and other products so admins never have to worry about manually calculating payroll or updating deductions and expenses.

Our overall experience with Rippling has been excellent, which is reflected in our high ratings across the board. The main reasons for this high score are the platform's ability to automate and centralize our critical HR and Payroll processes, allowing us to manage a growing, multi-state workforce with minimal administrative overhead. What has worked well is the near-instantaneous onboarding and the 100% data accuracy in our bi-weekly payroll runs. The primary area that hasn't worked as smoothly is the complexity of building custom reports and the lack of clear, upfront pricing for all the modular add-ons.

Negotiations with Rippling on prices for their services can be frustrating because the platform is still a fledgling with limited customizations and many bugs/oversights that our HR team needs to discover for them to work on fixing, but at the same time, many services from Rippling are a la carte and it feels like they nickel and dime you for every feature, despite the limited capabilities of what they offer.

Unified HR/Payroll Data: The platform serves as a single source of truth, ensuring that any employee change (raise, address, benefits) instantly syncs across HR and Payroll, guaranteeing accuracy and compliance. Onboarding Automation: The best-in-class workflow for new hires drastically cuts administrative time (by over 80%), allowing us to provision app access, set up payroll, and enroll benefits in minutes. Scalability and Compliance: Rippling's automatic handling of multi-state/multi-jurisdiction compliance and tax filing gives our small HR team the confidence to scale our business without worrying about complex regulatory mistakes.

- Ability to customize access to various account access types (user, admin, super admin, etc.) - Ease of Ability to switch between different account types for admins and higher level users - Useful built-in HR resources to refer to stay compliant with state and federal labor guidelines

Payroll: it shows exactly what has changed for each individual from cycle to cycle, so I can easily flag any issues Reviews: Very easy to set up and to customize, and able to set different due dates for different aspects of the review process (and set different forward facing and internal due dates) Spend/Finance: Can't say enough about how nice it is to manage our credit cards, expenses, and reimbursements all from our HR platform. It's one of their newer offerings so there are improvements that could be made, but it's still a huge step up for us from how we were managing these, from both the admin side and employee user experience.

Dislike

Reporting Complexity: Creating highly custom or multi-layered financial and compliance reports is unintuitive and often requires external support, rather than being a simple self-service function. Support Accessibility: While the specialists are knowledgeable, accessing a dedicated account manager or getting a rapid response for non-critical, complex issues often requires navigating a multi-step support process. Pricing Structure: The modular, add-on pricing model is opaque and can lead to unexpected expenses. We wish the cost structure for various features was more transparent and bundled upfront for easier budgeting.

Dislike

- Lack of ability for standard-level users to reactivate previously deactivated accounts (If someone leaves your company and returns at another time, instead of reactivating their previous account, Rippling creates another one and does not openly distinguish how to access the new one to the standard-level user) - Rippling customer service agents do not seem to be passionate about helping users. I've spoken to agents in their help chat as a super admin and the agents were blunt, lacked empathy, unaccommodating, and gave little information. I had to ask various questions to get the help I needed because they gave generic cookie-cutter answers that did not address my question. - Despite notification customizations, Rippling's automated system sends various emails and notifications and tasks unrelated to individual positions.

Dislike

The main issue we've encountered is in the Benefits module, and that we're not able to fully configure our medical insurance company contributions in the way that we want to. We've opted for a bandaid fix for now, which means that some employees' information is incorrect, and are really hoping that they make product changes before our next Open Enrollment cycle at the end of the year. Due to the contributions issue, I have to manually update payroll deductions. This hasn't been quite as smooth as it should be, and there have been some challenges getting the Benefits deductions area to correctly sync with Payroll. We've opted not to connect our company email with Rippling, and because we're not using that feature, it's not allowing us to enter work email addresses at all in individual's profiles. It's not a huge issue, but is inconvenient. Our implementation manager said that there should be a way to fix this, but our account manager wasn't able to provide much guidance so I haven't looked into it further.

    Overall this is a great product. We're a smaller company and Rippling has a lot of features that would be amazing for large organizations - we're just not big enough to need them or find value in them, but it's still great for a company of our size (~50 employees/contractors). We moved from our previous provider becuase they were completely changing their service structure and increasing our cost considerably. As the main admin using our HRIS systems, Rippling is by far a superior product and was less expensive than staying with the previous provider.

    Rippling has made our day-to-day backend processes much easier to manage. The platform connects well with many of the tools we use, which helps improve efficiency and keeps our capabilities in one place, making it almost a one-stop shop. There are still a few features which could be enhanced, but overall, it has been a reliable system that supports our team's operations effectively and efficiently.
