At one point Chatter felt like the future of workplace collaboration, just needing a brave push, some critical mass, where businesses would drop email and finally think about collaborating in a much more contextual fashion. Unfortunately, when that moment arrived with the Pandemic, the product was so under-nourished that it simply wilted in the face of its competitors and even faced its own competition in the form of Salesforce's Slack. It's hard to see where the future of Chatter lies. Will it be retired in favour of a Slack powered engine? Will it just stay as it is forever and be a limited form of company communication.

In the past, I loved how commentary, collaboration all existed with the records on Salesforce. Instead of digging through emails to see what has happened on a particular account or case, you've got contextual history right there in front of you. That is clever, that is useful. Also, it is baked into the platform. No need to provide a business case or deal with a tricky integration.

It can be a challenge to keep track of multiple chatter posts on one case

Frankly, as a workplace collaborative tool, it pales in comparison to all the others. Everybody has moved onto Microsoft Teams - which has a huge advantage as an incumbent software provider with just about everybody running Office365. What it can do is pretty limited, and it just feels old to use now. When surfaced into a Salesforce Community, again - it gets you looking at other vendors who can do that one particular thing well. Chatter can also get quite messy. With field tracking, record updates... anything pertinent can just get lost in the noise. I find the much leaner Activity timeline much better.

- Crashes rarely but without notice - Time consuming to set up - Chatting multiple people is a bit difficult

    Difficult to implement in a few ways, but is a nice all-in-one tool

    Chatter is a really good tool for the squad's communication. We are gradually changing our internal communication tools to Chatter. Is easier for the user and easier for the admin, because of the information are all in the same local. The difficulty is to change the mindset for the users.
